Yakima Hydroseeding Services

About Us
We’re Awesome Grass Hydroseeding, a family-run business rooted in Yakima, WA, serving Eastern Washington for over 25 years. We’ve grown from a small operation to a trusted name in hydroseeding, tackling everything from residential lawns to large-scale erosion control.
Why Hydroseeding Works Here
Yakima and Central Washington in general aren’t easy places to establish cool-season lawns. We’re lucky to get 8 inches of annual precipitation, yet the dominant lawn species here, Kentucky Bluegrass, needs about 2.5 inches of water a week to stay green—sometimes more during peak summer months. Factor in Kentucky Bluegrass’s long germination window (14-21 days) and Yakima’s ideal growing temperatures, and you’re left with a “by-the-book” seeding window of just 4 to 6 weeks. Seed outside those short windows, and you’re more likely to end up with a more complicated grow.
That’s where hydromulch comes in—it gives us more wiggle room with the growing season. We’ve successfully seeded in every month of the year here in the Valley. When it’s 105°F outside, properly applied hydromulch retains moisture, keeping seeds from drying out too fast and holding the seedbed steady under constant watering. In colder months, the mulch wicks moisture from the air, soaking up morning dew for the seedlings to use as the day warms up. Sure, colder temperatures slow germination, but proper mulching keeps your seedbed intact during that time.

How We Support You
Hydromulch is a great medium for growing grass, but it’s a process. I provide general instructions and season-specific guidance for customers, especially during the trickier months. Our company phone number is my personal cell, and I always encourage customers to call or text me with questions—or even send pictures. Every season’s different, so I’m upfront about my take on current seeding conditions.
I stick with my customers after the seeding’s done, whether problems pop up, you need advice, or you want some touch-up seeding. I’ve got folks from the early days still asking about fertilizers or sending pictures of random trouble spots (yes, it’s usually just a dog spot!). We offer free on-site quotes in the Yakima Valley—covering Yakima, Selah, Moxee, Naches, and even Zillah, Wapato, and Toppenish. We do free quotes in the Lower Valley on days we’re there.
Custom Yakima Seed Blends
We carry legacy seed mixes from companies that hydroseeded in the Valley from the 1990s through the 2010s but no longer offer the service. This lets us match existing lawns for septic repairs or overseeding. Alongside those, we have our current standard lawn mixes and the newest top NTEP-rated cultivars. If you’re a lawn nerd and found some seed on your own and want us to use it—no problem! (Keep in mind I can’t guarantee seed quality if you supply the seed.) With multiple seed vendors, we can source almost anything produced in the Pacific Northwest or find an equivalent substitution.
Not everyone wants a Kentucky Bluegrass lawn, so we offer a wide range of sustainable alternatives too. We have lawns in different tiers of drought tolerance that look like traditional lawns, all the way to pure native grass species. Grasses native to Yakima are not lawn mixes, keep in mind. If you look at the sides of our roads, hillsides, and riparian habitats, you will find a surprising and exciting (to me) number of unique grasses. It’s not all just cheatgrass and goatheads if you look closely. We can source grasses harvested within our geographic range and custom-blend them just for your project if you’d like!

Pricing and DIY Options
How we price our service isn’t necessarily by the square foot. Seed mix, location, water access, site access, and ground slope—how much mulch is required—are all variables. If someone calls and only gives me square footage, I can give ballpark pricing, but it’s typically higher than if I come out and give you an in-person quote. For example, water is always a big one. We can’t always bring water with us. If we need to fill equipment on-site and all you have is a garden hose pumping out 5 gallons per minute, I’m paying my help to stand around while the seeder fills. If you have a 3-inch irrigation outlet and we can fill 800 gallons of water in 5 minutes, you save on labor costs.
Comparing hydroseeding costs to sod—say half the cost or a third the cost—isn’t always spot-on, though it can be in general, depending on the job. If we’re seeding Needle and Thread Grass using Profile Flexterra at 3,500 lbs per acre on a 1:1 slope 700 feet from the hydroseeder, sod could be half as expensive. But good luck attaching it to a 1:1 slope! Contractor pricing is available. Hydroseeding out of the budget or just enjoy the DIY experience of seeding a lawn? We do sell our seed, fertilizers, and even have access to pelletized mulch you can put down. Just give me your lawn dimensions, and I can put a package together. We offer free delivery within the general area of Yakima, Selah, and Moxee.
